The High, Speed iPhone 12 5G 2020 event – that’s what everyone is talking about. And it’s caused a star among the smartphone community. For iPhone 11 owners, however, there’s a confusion at hand: is it viable to upgrade to one of the iPhone 12 models?
The confusion is further aggravated with two iPhone 12 models (a higher end and a lower end one with varying display sizes than iPhone 11s). In fact, just the standard iPhone 12 replicates the diagonal screen of last year’s iPhone 11, but even it swaps LED for OLED. The rest is either bigger or smaller than what Apple has introduced in the previous years.
Coming over to the features, the 5G connectivity support, design refresh boasting flat sites, impressive camera upgrades, and the A14 chip has caused a lot of iPhone 11 owners to ask themselves, “should I upgrade to iPhone 12?”. To help out, we want to highlight the differences between iPhone 12 Pro Max and 12 Pro vs iPhone 11 Pro Max and 11 Pro so that you can make a decision when the iPhone 12 Pro series releases.
iPhone 12 Pro Max/Pro vs iPhone 11 Pro Max/Pro – Color options
- Gold
- Silver
- Graphite (new), Space Gray (last year)
- Pacific Blue (new), Midnight Green (last year)
Like the Apple Watch 6 was introduced in blue color for the very first time, Pacific Blue is the new color in the iPhone 12 Pro series. It will be the replacement for the Midnight Green which was loved by iPhone 11 Pro users, but everyone has their own preferences, we feel.
iPhone 12 Pro Max vs iPhone 11 Pro Max – Display
- 7 inches (new), 6.5 inches (last year)
- 2778*1284 pixels (new), 2688*1242 pixels (last year)
- Ceramic Shield (new), Gorilla Glass (last year)
By the way, the iPhone 5 is looking to get it flat sides back (it’s a joke). But yeah, the iPhone 12 Pro Max and iPhone 11 Pro Max would have a bigger difference than the ex-generational jump, all thanks to the upcoming handsets’ flat sides. Plus, let’s not forget that the many 5G antenna notches. Display sizes will also increase by 0.2 inches with the iPhone 12 Pro Max having slightly the bigger display. But don’t worry, 0.2 inches isn’t that big of a difference, so the iPhone 12 Pro Max will still be comfortable to hold.
iPhone 12 Pro vs iPhone 11 Pro – Display
- 1 inches (new), 5.8 inches (last year)
- 458 PPI (new), 460 PPI (last year)
- Ceramic Shield (new), Gorilla Glass (last year)
- 2436*1125 pixels (new), 2532*1170 pixels (last year)
These specs can make you think of the difference, but know that the 6.1 inches iPhone 12 Pro in comparison to the 5.8 inches iPhone 11 pro won’t have the biggest difference in display this year, as there will also be a 5.4 inches iPhone 12 that’s going to have a half inch shorter screen than the 6.1 inches iPhone. That being said, the 6.1 inches 12 Max iPhone get a display bump, which makes it akin the iPhone 12 Pro.
iPhone 12 Pro Max/Pro vs iPhone 11 Pro Max/Pro – Specifications
- A14 5nm chipset (new), A13 7nm chipset (last year)
- 5G LTE (new), 4G LTE (last year)

- 6 meters water depth resistance (new), 4 meters water depth resistance (last year)
Each of the iPhone 12 model feature the powerful A14 bionic chip that arrived with iPhone Air 4. It’s the world first 5nm chip for a smartphone. The A13 bionic chip had 8.4 billion transistors inside – this one has billion. This makes the chip improve in terms of both energy consumption and performance. Plus, the 6GB ram is there on Pro models. Moreover, all four iPhone 12 will support the low to mid-band “Sub-6GHz) 5G and high-band “mmWave” 5G signals.
iPhone 12 Pro Max/Pro vs iPhone 11 Pro Max/Pro – Camera
- Sensor Shift OIS (new), Single OIS (last year)
- 5x telephoto optical zoom (new), 2x telephoto optical zoom (last year)
- F/1.6 (new), F/1.8 wide angle lens aperture (last year)
- 7P 5mm larger (new), 6P lenses (last year)
- LiDAR camera for VR apps (new)
- Larger pixels and sensors for low-light capture (new)
- Dee Fusion 2, Smart HDR 3, Dolby Vision Video, Night Mode Portraits (new)
The 5G connectivity was long overdue for the device, but the bigger surprise is the camera enhancements in the iPhone 12 Pro models. The camera lenses will be 5mm larger in width and length. Plus, low light captures will be better on the 2020 iPhones with Night Mode Timelapse and 2-3 times quicker autofocus. You’ll also find better image stabilization on iPhone 12 Pro Max/Pro due to the brand-new Sensor Shift OIS tech. The technology allows the sensor to eliminate shakes rather than the lens. Both Pro models include this along with the additional LiDAR camera.
The 12 Pros also feature a 2.5x optical zoom courtesy of the telephoto lens, as well as the LiDAR depth photo sensor. The sensor leverages the “time of flight” tech and might be helpful for enhanced portraits on the devices. There’s also 12MP sensors , and improved microphones on the 12 series (these also have an audio zoom feature). Moreover, Apple has expanded Night Model on 12 Pro to the telephoto camera. Support for selfie sensor ultra-wide-angle shooter is currently delayed to due to software problems.
For impressive results, Apple is planning for the wide-angle camera aperture’s increase, bringing it to f/1.6. This will enable the sensor to shoot more light compared to the aperture on the 11 Pro Max and 11 Pro’s wide angle lense.
iPhone 12 Pro Max vs 11 Pro Max – Battery specs
- 4400 mAh (new), 3969 mAh (last year)
- 12 hours of video streaming and 20 hours of video playback
- 80 hours audio playback
The 4400 mAh battery on the 12 Pro Max is almost a 12 percent increase from the 11 Pro Max’s battery. The iPhone 12 Pro’s logic board is also split in 2 and a rib bon is used for a connection to accommodate the larger-sized batter. Since the displays size between the two devices isn’t. much, the 5nm A14 processor and the bigger battery should improve the 12 Pro Max’s battery life. Even the iPhone 11 Pro had great battery endurance, so imagine the possibility.
iPhone 12 Pro vs 11 Pro – Battery specs
- 3687 mAh (new), 3046 mAh (last year)
- 17 hours video playback (new), 18 hours video playback (last year)
You should by now that four new iPhone 12’s will arrive in fall 2020, and without a charger in the package. However, Apple is going to offer a brand-new charger as a separate purchase. You can buy it if you want fast charging, or keep using your 18W or 5W charger.
The iPhone 11 Pro has a smaller battery pack compared to the upcoming iPhone 12 Pro, but the display and size is also smaller, so the bump in capacity may not have an association with the battery life.
iPhone 12 Pro Max/Pro vs iPhone 11 Pro Max/Pro – Pricing
- From $1099 for iPhone 12/11 Pro Max (base model at this price)
- From $999 for iPhone 12/11 Pro (base model at this price)
The community didn’t expect to change the starting price of the iPhone 11 Pro series when the 12 Pro models released and that’s exactly what happened (even though the iPad 4 base price increased with the fresh design). Even with 5g connectivity, better camera, and larger display, Apple didn’t rely on an excused to keep at least a $50 price difference between the new and old Pro models. Still, 128 GB storage is now the base storage.
What do you think of all this? Will you upgrade to an iPhone 12?
