One of my colleague’s was sharing photos with me yesterday. As he went through the Camera Roll on his iPhone, his Live Photos came alive as he swiped for a second. However, I faced the issue of Live Photo Previews not working on iPhone when I did the same. Luckily, I was able to find a solution after realizing that mine didn’t work and I didn’t bother to pay attention since I bought my iDevice.
So being the owner of UnlockBoot, I had to try fixing the problem myself. Therefore, I paid a visit to Settings -> Photos & Camera section. After discovering there was no option or physical toggle for the small previews, it hit me that there could be Settings difference causing Live Photo Previews not working on iPhone.
So I checked Settings on my colleague’s phone, my own, and my father’s (his Live Photo previews weren’t functioning as well). Then I realized that there was a setting that was different on my and my father’s phone compared to my colleague’s phone.
If Live Photo Previews not Working – Turn off Reduce Motion
I don’t like the parallax effect brought on in iOS 7. That’s why I utilized Reduce Motion to cope. However, I found out just recently that this was also switching off the good experience of viewing Live Photo previews to its full functionality. To get them back, there’s a need to switch off the Reduce Motion thing.
- Open “Settings”.
- Tap “General”.
- Select “Accessibility”.
- Choose “Reduce Motion” and switch it “Off”.

This should solve the issue of Live Photo previews not working on iPhone. Another thing I noticed was a tiny circle in thumbnail views if an image was categorized as a Live Photo on my colleague’s iPhone. Haven’t been able to figure that one out, yet. Let me know in comments if you know a fix.
